It is the largest port in Germany, the second largest port in Europe and one of the nine largest container ports in the world. Although the city of Hamburg is not located directly on the sea, but its presence on the River Elbe, relatively wide and navigable, and its proximity to the North Sea, paved the way for it to become one of the largest ports. The port is located in the city center, 110 km from the mouth of the river in the North Sea. In 2004, 7 million containers were emptied and loaded. The port is the first in the world to download coffee.
